6 Ways to Love and be Loved

Often times we speed through our work day, live for the weekends and zone out through seemingly dull times in our lives. We lose sight of whats important, whats life-giving and what brings us joy as we live our days on cruise control. When we are unaware of whats going on around us, what other people are experiencing, we aren’t able to live a life full of love and compassion.

I want to continue on with the theme of radiating love this month, I wanted to talk about a subject that is very dear to my heart. That is showing love to those around you through your actions, words and thoughts.

This past year I saw the movie About Time, which if you haven’t seen it yet, is arguably one of the best movies in a long time, or ever. And no not just because it’s a cute rom-com (which it very much is) but because of the beautiful message that it supports. The message that we are only given one life to live, that we should live our days with intentionality, and that we are meant to live a life full of love towards others and towards ourselves. Here’s a little clip from a scene in the movie that wonderfully displays this theme:

While thinking of what to write for this post, I reflected on this movie and the powerful ideas that we should try to live by everyday. These tips are ones I’ve come up with for everyone, to create a life full of love. YOU have the power to reach people in your life and YOU hold the power to change how others treat you. So if you want to have an abundance of love in your life, showing love to others is the best place to start.

1. BE KIND.

This is kind of obvious, but of the most importance. Kindness goes a long way and you know what? It’s so easy! It can be as simple as holding a door open, letting someone go ahead of you in line at Starbucks, or asking how your cashiers day is going. These simple actions will bring joy to those around you and radically affect your attitude.

2. BE HONEST.

A give-in in any relationship, honesty is the best policy. Open up, be honest about what you’re going through, what you’re feeling and thinking and welcome all the wonderful blessings that will come of it. Being honest and truthful will allow people to relate to you and love you in the right ways, it will open up your life to more growth than you ever thought possible! So be real and be YOU.

3. BE AWARE.

Look up at the sky. Watch the sunset. Listen to the birds chirp. Allow your mind to drink in your surroundings so that you can be fully attentive to what’s happening around you. When you’re paying attention to those around you, it allows you to love people in the ways they desire to be loved. If you notice that your roommate is too busy to make dinner, double your own and share it with them. We all have different love languages and taking the time to pick up on someones personal love language is key in relationship growth.

4. BE POSITIVE.

When you cultivate positive thoughts it will permeate through your entire soul and to all the people around you. There’s too much negativity in this world and adding to it will only bring you down. Next time you have a negative thought, write down a list of all the positive things you are grateful for and stick it someplace you will always see it!

5. BE SILLY.

Stop taking yourself so seriously! We’re all a little weird… you’re lying to yourself if you say you’re not (remember the honesty thing?). How are you going to love yourself when you’re trying to pretend someone you’re not? Time is precious, so don’t spend it being so hard on yourself! Start doing things that you love and that bring laughter to your life. Any bad day can be cured with a good laugh sesh. Watch a funny movie, hang out with that hilarious friend of yours and START LOVING LIFE because laughter really can be the best medicine.

6. BE ALWAYS BLOOMING.

How is a garden going to grow if it’s not properly watered, pruned and nourished? Remember to constantly feed your own garden with the proper nutrients. Get enough sleep, take time to pamper yourself, drink in knowledge, soak up sunshine so that your petals can grow and you can become the most beautiful version of yourself. Shine bright so that others can see the light through you and be influenced by your positivity, your kindness and your joy.
