Acai Bowl Recipe & Health Facts

By Dominique Astorino May 26, 2016

Today, I come to you with more valuable, life-changing information. A product that is not yet mainstream, but is considered a miracle-food by many.

I am here to introduce something to those not fortunate enough to live in coastal Southern California/Hawaii/Brazil (I’m assuming that’s a lot of people).

The Açaí Bowl

If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you know I struggle with various addictions to things that are unhealthy  delicious. This one may trump them all. I am now going to welcome you into an elite club/support group called Açaíholics Anonymous.

Let’s do a little background to get everyone up to speed on the pure, antioxidant-infused joy that is an açaí bowl.

An açaí bowl is composed of a thick, icy, smoothie-like blend poured over a bed of crunchy granola and topped with fresh fruit. Foodboner. But what is an açaí berry, you might ask?26Acai BerriesThis little nugget is the Brazilian’s secret-weapon of beauty. You may have thought it was the fact that they speak Portuguese, the most useless (but also awesome) language in the world (I mean seriously, they could’ve picked French or Spanish but they’re too cool for that so they mixed the two), or maybe Brazilian waxing, blowouts, or bikini bottoms – but nay. That wasn’t enough sexiness nor awesomeness for the Brazilians.

The açaí berry grows in one place in the entire world—the Amazonian rainforest, which is noted by scholars as the most badass, mystical and mysterious of all the ecosystems on Earth.

The fruit itself is packed with nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants. All this goodness in a little berry promotes healthy weight, prevents cancer, gives you energy and makes your hair, skin and nails look awesome. Oh, and if that’s not enough, it helps with anti-aging.

Since I found out that the açaí bowl is not only a divine and luscious bowl of nature’s best flavors, but also pretty good for you, I developed a not-so-bad habit of eating them at least once a week. Hence, Açaíholics Anonymous. Welcome.

My favorite spots to get a bowl of amazonian goodness are Banzai Bowls (Orange County) and Honey’s (North County, San Diego). Both are experts in the crafting of this magical, frozen delicacy.

If you don’t live near these places (first of all, sorry), here’s a recipe to make your own (my version is very different from the traditional one… it also is better so just go with it):

Acai Bowl

2 packs Sambazon frozen açaí
1/2 frozen banana
1/4 c coconut milk
1/4 c pineapple juice
1/2 c frozen strawberries
1/2 c frozen mango

1. Blend all ingredients.
2. Pour over 1 cup of granola, and top with sliced strawberries & bananas, blueberries & raspberries and shredded coconut.
3. Drizzle honey or sprinkle bee pollen. Sit back and enjoy the beautification of your body from the inside out.

Before you know it, you’ll be an açaíholic too. However, this is an addiction you may not want to curb. You’re welcome (again).
